ART BAKER'S STORY

On May 6th Art wrote to me and sent me a copy of the above picture as well as details of his experiences.  His letter follows:

Dear Mike,

This is the only picture I have of our tank crew.  Neil Fast was on leave when we were taken prisoner.

Jack Gardiner had joined us as a co-driver.  We were blown up, I was out cold, they pulled me out of the burning tank.  Afterwards we were taken prisoner to Stalag 11B.  I still have my tag.  In the prison camp we saw a notice asking for volunteers to drive for the International Red Cross.  Truck drivers were needed to deliver food parcels to all the prison camps.  Fred Funnell and I volunteered to get out of the camp.

The Germans used to haul troops in the Red Cross trucks.  Allied planes used to come down to strafe us, if no troops came out running they would come back and tilt their wings.

Sincerely,  Art Baker
